Missing: 2.5 Million TV Viewers
The advent of IPTV, blogging, YouTube, and other technologies has lead to a decrease in regular TV viewer ship, even though Conan O’Brien thinks that we are in a TV golden age.
Scariest of all for the networks, however, is the idea that many people are now making their own television schedules. The industry isn’t fully equipped to keep track of them, and as a result the networks are scrambling to hold on to the nearly $8.8 billion they collected during last spring’s ad-buying season. As traditional TV winds down, and people adopt and really start using IPTV, Tivo, and other technologies to have their favorite TV shows fit their schedule. It is no surprise that the standard TV industry is starting ot falter. As users, if we can get the whole season of Battle Star Galactica on line over TV Links or other similar streaming sites, or just wait until the DVD’s come out, then that is the option that we choose.
Really though, one of the best things they could do is offer their own streaming services, with advertising, and draw people to those web sites rather than the current set of web sites. With Macromedia controls, you can embed advertising into the data stream as we wrote about here and here.
Plus the idea of using the PC to watch TV while doing work, we know people who do not own televisions in favor of watching TV over the Computer where they spent a majority of their day.
Depending on how the industry approaches this process, hopefully they will not sue everyone in sight, rather come up with a non annoying compelling reason to watch it at their web sites. It would be great if we could just go to the Sci-Fi channel and stream BSG all day, or SG-1 all day, even with ads, that would be good entertainment, give them accounting, and make some dosh off the idea that we will be there all day long.
