What is up with Chemistry and eHarmony
If you have been following the Chemistry.com versus E-Harmony.com advertising outbid on TV or on their web sites lately, one has to wonder what is up with that. On the other hand, is there a fundamental difference between what the two sites are trying to do?
If you look at the about pages on each site, and what they claim to do, there is a basic difference in how they approach the relationship matching scene.
Chemistry dot com states:
What’s different about Chemistry? It’s our belief that meaningful relationships are built on two equally important foundations: compatibility and chemistry. Other sites may help you find out if you’re compatible, but only Chemistry’s next-generation system, based on years of research into human attraction and successful relationships, is designed to help you find both of these essential elements. Where e-Harmony states:
At eHarmony our patented Compatibility Matching System TM narrows the field from millions of candidates to a highly select group of singles with whom you share deep levels of compatibility. Where other sites match on a picture and a paragraph, eHarmony matches you based on compatibility in the most important areas of life - like values, character, intellect, sense of humor, spiritual beliefs, passion, and up to 24 other dimensions. Nothing against either site, the difference lies in how they approach the basic premise of making a relationship. Depending on the person and how truthful they are in answering the questions on both sites, there might not be a match period on the site for you. Chemistry seems more likely to find someone based on multiple factors, where e-harmony seems like they are trying to find a soul mate.
Depending on what you are looking for, and what your dating style is (death, stunt, or fun) e-harmony might not be able to figure out if there really is someone in their database that would work for you. You might be so outside the envelope, or based on a “Lie Index” (where they know you have lied about something, this is standard in many professional personality exams) they do not think you are being honest with yourself. Chemistry probably is not as rigorous, which leaves more options open to the person using the site.
In the mean time, it looks like the sites break down on Rigor, or scientific academic exactness of their personality surveys. E-Harmony looks like it is more rigorous and thus more precise a tool than Chemistry.com’s tool.
Either way, if you want a date, there are many ways of going about it, and if you are really truly eccentric, e-harmony might not be for you. Chemistry.com looks like a viable alternative.
