Why we love Star Wars

30th anniversary, who would have thought when sitting in a movie complex in Corvallis Oregon in 1977 that we would still be talking about Star Wars in 2007. Only this time we have the DVD’s so we can sit back and watch them in style with popcorn and soda, and without the smell of urine and unwashed bodies in a movie theater of today.

The enduring part of star wars is that it has a hero villain story line that can not be beat, obvious bad guy that ends up being redeemed in the end, obvious hero, naive but ready to take on the world and winning against all odds. One person against the entire empire supported and helped by friends, comrades, and competent people all around them.

We wish that real life was like that.

So on the 30th anniversary, we still love star wars enough to have fun star wars USB devices, the DVD’s, movie posters, and the whole plethora of trading cards, and other fun stuff. Lego Star Wars, the video game where chewie really does rip people’s arms off, and the actual toys that lets you play in your own make believe star wars environment in the middle of the living room.

Star Wars technology that exists today? Check out this bit from Cnet, makes for a great read. I just want C3PO in my living room serving the drinks and taking care of the neighbors.

It is enduring because it is a story of triumph over evil, and in our often obscure and arcane world, sometimes the obvious just helps us make sense of it all.
