Web 20 as a fun waste of time
What PC notes that for those of us who are less motivated, might find 10 videos of some slob being hit in the nuts with a baseball bat a bit of a distraction. Nevertheless, for all those stupid videos, there are usually good things that go along with it as well.
All this is opening up a huge can of worms for IT chiefs. The web revolution has made it easier than ever for people to access the information they need to do their job better. Just one example is the series of web seminars on how to run a green IT department that IT Week and its sister title Computing are currently hosting. These hour-long interactive web TV shows allow IT staff to hear presentations, ask questions, talk to their peers and download information, without leaving their desks. Source: WhatPC
Yes, everyone knows that YouTube can be a huge time suck, and we know that there are some very good professional sites out there that can help get some just in time training. Channel 9, Channel 10 and Port 25 come to mind. ITToolbox and other blog header sites with multiple writers all talking about something that seems cool, or they find wrong with the industry. Sites like Mashable, Techcrunch, Slashdot and Techmeme all might be huge wastes of time, but if you want to know what is happening in the web 2.0 world, this is the place to be.
All of these might look like time wasters, but if used right, they can prove to be invaluable. Management though has to use some discretion with this kind of thing. If the permanently distracted are your basic type of employee, then working out a URL filtering system at work might be for you.
Otherwise, there is a whole of lot of distraction within web 2.0, most of it bad, some of it excellent, and use your discretion on this one.
