Adobe Air formerly Apollo

Since we have been playing around with the alpha version of Adobe’s Apollo, its too bad they changed the code name from Apollo, the Greek god of power and coolness, to Air, light fluffy and insubstantial. While the name change is not cool, the beta version is. Daily tech reports:

Adobe Systems today released the beta version of Adobe Integrated Runtime (AIR), formerly code named Apollo. Adobe AIR is a cross-operating system application runtime that allows developers to use HTML/CSS, Ajax, Adobe Flash and Adobe Flex to extend rich Internet applications to the desktop. Key elements of Adobe AIR are open source, including the WebKit HTML engine, the ActionScript Virtual Machine (Tamarin project) and SQLite local database functionality. Source: Daily Tech

Going through it, the software looks like it is going to be easier to use, and run right up against the things you can do with SilverLight and with popfly. While popfly is drag and drop, no programming language skills required, Air is closer to SilverLight in what you need to know to make it happen.

This is all very good to see that the hybrid IDE’s are going to be closer to what you would normally have with any other IDE. You are really getting more functionality, and extra buttons that allow you to do cool stuff.

The sad part right now is if you search on Adobe Air, you end up with an endless list of air conditioners (who knew?). So the support sites that were originally out for Adobe Apollo are still going to be the best source of information on them. Do not rely on Google or other search engines for a bit until they catch up with it, or Adobe can obtain the domain name, or otherwise to make their stuff easier to find. Or you can go here, to Adobe’s web site.

Overall, well worth checking out, especially if this is a direction that you or your company wants to go in.
