Not yet ready for prime time Operator 11

We took at look at Operator 11 via Robert Scobles web site, via Russell Heimlich, and sometimes when you want to do a demo, you really need to make sure that things are working well. We can ping on Bill Gates for the demo’s where the system blue screened on him, and how we get to pick on Jason Calacanis for a technology that might be promising, but is not ready for prime time.

When you crash 140 servers to bring up some friends to try out some tech, the technology probably is not ready for prime time. While it is fun to see new technology, looking at the Operator 11 video over on Russell’s site was painful. It was a lot like looking at really bad web cams at a cut rate adult entertainment site.

All hype. But has promise, much like most technology, depends on what you expect. Jason.TV is cooler though.

We did not even watch the whole thing because it was painful, but here were our issues.

Hugely crappy video, pixilated, breakups, pauses, and other picture quality issues that were distracting, eventually we just moved the video to the background of the computer and did other stuff.

Audio quality was equally crappy, when the video pauses, the audio is going to break up. As well, the sound levels between various entities that were on the video had different sound levels, one person would be hugely loud, another person would be very soft.

Jerking around the audio control is not anyone’s idea of fun, especially when people are singing about sex really loud after a really soft sounding segment. That turned heads in the office.

Oh and listening to Jason threatening to fire everyone was really poor management even joking about it, people are probably looking for a job today or at least even more paranoid about it. Sure fire your staff because things failed, then offer prizes? Oi!

Basically, the experience was not all that good, and while this might be an alpha version, it will be much better as a social news casting process or social community process via video if they get the issues fixed. And they figure out a way not to crash their servers when bringing up 5 or 6 people on line. That had to hurt, but if they want commiseration, they might want to talk to Bill G, maybe he will buy the drinks.
