Technorati takes a step and three folks call it a day over at Technorati, which makes us wonder what they are going to do next, then we want to know where Technorati is going to go, then we want to know all sorts of other lurid details that we won’t get for months until someone snaps and starts blabbing.
In the life of companies, there are moments of welcoming and there are times when one must bid a fond farewell. For Technorati, at this moment, we must say a warm goodbye to our colleagues Adam Hertz and Tantek Celik. I remember when both started here at Technorati three years ago, literally on the same day, and find it ironic, therefore, that both will leave us on the same day, even if for different reasons. Three years in a technology company isn’t bad, but makes things a lot more interesting when a “mass” departure usually happens. It means in general that these folks might have had some interesting idea that they wanted to pursue. That happens and too much should not be made of it, that is really common in IT. We have seen entire departments just take a hike when management will not or could not fund a “great idea”.
And not that Technorati is really all that troubled either, they just got some loot, about 1 million dollars to help them out, they have decent advertising, have good reports on the state of the blogosphere, and otherwise perform a useful service used by millions.
It will be very interesting to see where the company goes when the brain trust leaves, and while not quite time to write Technorati off the map yet. When the big folks upstairs leave, there is usually a reason. When they leave en-mass there is an even better reason, and people should be watching this one closely because Technorati might and probably will change, and change a lot.
