Mr Wong

Mr. Wong is in a closed beta, and invited techwag to take a look at what they are up to. So we took them up on it, and coming up with the idea of not quite ready for prime time, but looks cool.

The problems started early in the process, and while it is a closed beta, there were just some things that really stood out. Even in a beta, some things should just work.

The problem started with a pile of Java scripting errors on calls like the one below, every page had some form of Java Scripting issue with IE 7.0

Line: 605
Char: 3
Error: Object Required
Code: 0

So it looks like in the java script that there are a number of function calls that are not as complete as they could be.

When attempting to download the Mr. Wong tool bar, the site redirected me back to the login screen so there was no point in using that route directly. When we got to the point of being able to download the toolbar, they did not have anything for IE on the /stuff directory. While they offer the IE toolbar, it was impossible to find the toolbar for IE 7.0. We eventually abandoned the search on this one.

Many of the links didn’t work, or the problem is that you will click on a link to do a thing, and get something else, many redirects to the main page to re-login, meaning the cookie expires too quickly, or the links are just not working right. There were far too many stub links mister-wong.com/# to be of help at the initial start.

Bookmarks rather than getting an immediate success/non-success we were told that it would take a couple of minutes. However, once it was uploaded, an e-mail was sent to let me know that it had been successfully uploaded. The good thing is that the system would not let us upload the same file twice. The good part about the bookmarks is that they can remain private, and some of the more backwoods web sites that we like or important ones can be shared or not shared.

Over the next couple of days, e-mail trickled in from the system letting us know that things had been one, or completed.

Otherwise, most of what we found on Mister Wong was ok, as a store for your bookmarks, the eventual addition of the IE toolbar, and if they would add a personal blogging function (we did not find one) or even a note pad (we didn’t find one of those either), some wall or journaling function would make this a killer site. There would be many things we want to see combined, but that is our issue, and since we have not built one yet, probably will remain our issue.
