Internet File Sharing via Drive Way
One of the more interesting technologies is network based storage systems like Drive Way. Since people have large files, or they are worried about their computer systems crashing, some people are looking at a way to send very large files over the internet without resorting to Bittorrent or have no way to set up an FTP server to make that happen. This is where drive way comes in, need 500 megs, they have it, you store it, and let others pick the file up for what ever they need to do.
The way to pick up the file is a link is sent to the recipient that the file is ready for pickup, and they then go pick up what ever it is that you shared out. That does not mean that the e-mail can not be shared, but you can do some restrictions in Microsoft Office to take care of that if storing files that are somewhat sensitive.
The other good part is that they have an abuse section, if someone is sending you stuff, and you find it objectionable, then you send a note to driveway and they will take care of it. This in general is a good thing, especially if something went astray, or someone is doing something evil. As they state:
Driveway is a free online file sharing service that allows users to upload / share multiple files having a maximum size limit of 500 MB per file. This simple application is particularly useful for sharing files that are too large to be sent by e-mail services.
Driveway offers a simple solution to upload / share multiple files with your contacts anywhere in the world. You can upload files and share them, download files for viewing and even delete them.
Shared file recipients shall receive e-mails containing the links with which they can download and view the files. Only the ‘Text Verification’ has to be entered for this purpose. When the ‘Download’ link is clicked, the file metadata such as the name, size and description are displayed before the shared file is downloaded. Source: Driveway.com
The advent of on line storage is nothing new, with possible products like GDrive, and others, Drive Way is here now, with widgets, and a number of web 2.0 components that make life easier. The added bonus of having widget components means that if you need somewhere to store your very large movie files for later playback, or FLV files, that can be done automatically by the service. Or pictures can be presented as a slide show. Very nice for those who have hosting that limits the space you can take up like yahoo and MySpace.
You can check them out here and send large files
