Apples come back is also tied to computers

For a company written off as dead about a decade ago, apple has staged a come back that in the annals of business literature needs to be studied more. The interesting part is that while the recent rebranding as Apple only reflects the idea of a solid eco-system of products and services for the computer platform as well.

It was a smart idea to make software that works on windows, but the resurgence in apple’s computers has as much to do with the eco system developed by devices as anything else.

The disparity between the user base between Windows and Apple is noticeable, yet with all the press about how web 2.0 is driven by apple users, the sales of apple computers has been slowly picking up.

But a funny thing has happened over the past couple of quarters. While Apple has been firing on all cylinders, and the iPhone is selling hundreds of thousands of units a month, its Macintosh business is the hottest line of all. It roared back in the quarter that ended in June to reclaim its status as the company’s largest revenue source and, at long last, break that 5 percent share barrier, according to IDC.

Indeed, Apple’s U.S. Mac sales have grown at triple the rate of the rest of the PC industry since last fall, propelling it into third place in the U.S., behind Dell and Hewlett-Packard. Source: CNN

It has been 3 quarters since Vista has come out, and while it is still plagued with problems, and angry reviewers, apple has been silently building up market share, and that has caught the notice of many people along the way. You don’t argue when someone has moved from the dead fish pool to 3rd in sales in the USA.

Apple has figured out what they need to do, and as long as they keep the momentum, they might end up with a noticeable chunk of money in the kitty when it comes to computers, devices, software, and the rest of the eco system. Let Linux and Windows slog it out for the corporate environment. Let students purchase Apples, and then let those students get to work, and change corporate culture for the desktop.

Linux and Windows are dog fighting over servers; apple is letting the consumer base grow, while supporting Windows and Linux via virtual machines.

It is a great idea, and apple has pulled this off consistently well over the last 3 quarters, the year-end results should be even more interesting.
