GPhone is another definite maybe
The tubes are a buzz with the news about the Google phone, with Engaget starting off first with a well written description of the Google operating system. Given what we know about the Google OS, that is one product we would like to see commercialized, and while Yahoo is working with Hadoop, the idea is that if the Google OS was put up for sale, there would be a lot of people who purchase it, and it might transform the NAS/SAN industry. Google does some good things sometimes, and the Google OS is one of them.
The GPhone though could be transformative in the mobile phone industry. With a tight integration between video, audio, advertising, and killer applications to go with it might just transform the smaller screen.
Readwriteweb points out some additions to the GPhone that would be true market differentiators like Image stabilization and GPS, which would make a lot of parents happy, being able to track their kids.
The last 100 though has the best view point into this whole rumor system around the GPhone, and they state:
Unlike Apple, which positioned itself as hardware-focused and consumer-friendly with the iPhone, Google is diving much deeper into the world of telecommunications and many wonder if it plans to become a wireless carrier just like Verizon or AT&T. Google has been lobbying the U.S. government for changes in wireless policy. While it did not achieve as much as it wanted in the planning for the upcoming 700 Mhz spectrum auction in January, it did push for the fact that consumers in the U.S. can buy any phone and use it on any carrier in the future. It is a natural fit, but we think that Google’s ambitions are bigger, we think they want to be your ISP as well, with a set of applications, drop points in major cities via wireless, e-mail, news, Usenet, and a host of other applications that means computing in the cloud, adding mobile applications to this whole process makes sense. While there are not a lot of rumors about Google going the ISP route, given all that they are doing, we really think that is the ultimate destination.
Blogging Stocks comes closest to supporting the idea of the Google ISP as an ultimate destination, and directly taking on Symbian and Microsoft in the longer run. Google is fast approaching a break point where their actions are going to end up in one logical conclusion, and that is to become a major player in Operating Systems and Applications, both mobile and desktop just like Microsoft, Linux and just like Apple. That will be the interesting part, is there room in the industry for four major systems makers, without confusing the public.
