Netscape social news update
Last night Netscape posted an update on what is happening with the social news site and it makes for an interesting read, and dead bang on where the social bloggers were going with the multiple stories on Netscape moving their social network somewhere else.
We wrote about the change over here, that links to many other web sites, but with the new update starts of new blogging spin on exactly what it all is going to mean. Netscape says:
There are some upcoming changes to the Netscape.com site that we hope will improve your experience. We’ll be providing two different news options for you based on what you’ve told us over the past few months. Visitors to Netscape.com will see a more traditional news experience very soon. Don’t worry, the social news site isn’t going away! We will keep you updated on where you will be able to find the social news site as we get closer to making the switch. Source: Netscape
Then starts the blogosphere face off with many bloggers picking up the story because this is going to be a major switch, and could go very wrong, or very right. The story is compelling because it can go either way, and it also is a loss for the social bloggers who post their own stuff on the site.
Download Squad, Frantic Industries, and Matthew Ingram are the smaller blogs carrying the news. Our own entry on this is here.
Any movement of a major web site means that the search engines are going to be a while to change over all the links. This means pauses and delays in people getting information. Worst yet is the archiving function on the search engines that is going to be very broken by the end of the day. The archives will point to places that no longer exist.
It is doubtful that Yahoo, MSN, and Google have been contacted to see what is going to be the best way to make sure that move is successful on their part.
This one will be interesting to see how it pans out, and what problems are encountered by moving an entire web site to a new domain.
