Adblock Plus Upgrade Released

A new update to the controversial adblock software for Firefox was quietly released last night, with additions to the program that is a “This is a minor release closing two ways for web sites to detect Adblock Plus”.

The war between web masters and Firefox users took another escalation in the process, which is the normal state of things when it comes to money versus users. We are still of the opinion that not enough people click on ads anyways, that ½ of one percent realistically still works out to less than 1 person per day at this blog, and most likely fairly similar experiences across the Internet.

The interesting part is that everyone is still talking about how Adblock Plus is going to damage the Internet economy, but as readers have pointed out, there are others. There are adblock programs for IE, Safari, Opera, and just about every other web browser out there. The experience is not just confined to the inordinate attention focused on Adblock.

Web masters and companies that rely on advertising should be asking themselves if people are using adblock, any adblock program, then what is that web site doing wrong. Or what has fundamentally changed about advertising on the Internet that has made the experience so annoying for people that they feel this is the best option that they have.

We have all seen splogs and web sites that have 8 to 16 ads per page, and those are a distraction from reading the content. While some may call it theft, there is no real way around without an up escalation as we are seeing with Adblock. The interesting part is that while Adblock Plus gets a lot of attention, the other ad blocking programs are flying quietly under the wire, and improving themselves as well.
