Bad day for Bittorrent Demonoid shut down

09/25/2007 6:17 PM PST – UPDATE – We rarely update a file but GuyCool4002 has reported at this link that demonoid is not down, not a victim of CRIA, and that the torrent freak article cited here is FUD. We generally trust torrent freak, but anything with bittorrent has a lot of agenda, so don’t know, the circuitbox.com link is not known to us, but is a valuable counterpoint to this article. Thanks – Admin.

Original article – Version 1 no updates:

ISOHunt shut down all their trackers to US users, and now Techcrunch and Torrent Freak are reporting that demonoid has been shut down by CRIA. Two Bittorrent master systems in one day is a huge victory for Anti-P2P, and a bad day for Bittorrent site users. Nevertheless, here is how it is going to backfire.

If anyone remembers the Pirate Bay take down, the pirate bay was back in days and more popular than ever. We expect the same from demonoid, that when they come back, they will be more popular than ever, with more users, more content, and a harder time for any of the Anti-p2p groups to get a handle on them.

Takedown efforts seem to be in vain, as even the once much-loved Suprnova has recently made a come-back. The most that a takedown can accomplish is the intermediate interruption of service to that particular community, but as most BitTorrent users access and use more than one site, and the release groups continue unimpeded, the end results of these efforts from copyright groups are very under-whelming. Shutting down Demonoid for a few days will have no impact on the volume of BitTorrent traffic, and Demonoid will be back shortly and with more interest and new users than ever before. Torrentfreak reporting is here

Given how this works, at least how it has worked in the past, take down, resurrection, more attempts at take down, more resurrection, it is like a horror movie only in this instance we don’t know who the monster is. Although we would have to say that Bittorrent folks at this point have the moral high ground. Many users are only pirating content, not trying to use illegal hacking and false DMCA take down notices, as well getting ready to deal with a class action lawsuit due to their practices.

Bad day for Bittorrent users, the system will be slow as other trackers try to pick up the load from ISOHunt and Demonoid now, but we don’t expect P2P traffic to drop off that badly, we expect people to keep on doing what they are doing. And we expect the copyright groups to keep on doing what they are doing as well.

At this point, it is just a momentary disruption of Bittorrent traffic.
