If we refused to shop at places that spam us
As a conversation piece, what would happen if the consumer, any consumer decided that it would be a good idea to boycott every company that spammed our in boxes or our blogs. Right now, Sony for their PSP, Countrywide Financial, Pfizer who makes Viagra, and a whole host of other companies would be a lot of trouble today if a nationwide boycott happened.
In a marketing world, there are a lot of folks who do make marketing decisions based on the advertising that they get. We see advertising all the time on TV, on the radio, on web sites, advertising is everywhere. We accept that, and live with it, but if you have an e-mail address, or a blog, odds are most likely some advertising affiliate thinks that it is a good idea to send messages to you, thinking you will purchase Ci4l1S (Cialis) when it is horrifically spelled in elite speech from old school hackers.
If we were to boycott those folks who spam this blog, they would be:
Sony – PSP
UGG Boots
Countrywide Financial
Every single credit repair service on the planet
Every single credit reporting company in North America
Maple Story
Every free hosting site in America
Most splog sites that end in dot info
Knock off items like fake Louis Vuitton Bags
All cosmetic surgery plans
Every single site from Squidoo.com period
Bear Share P2P systems
JC Penny
Payday Loans
Apple Iphone and Ipod
Fosimax
Sunbeds
Anyone selling foreclosures
Any dating service
Any Hair stylist
Blog Spot
Anyone trying to sell prescription drugs via e-mail or blog comment
It is a thought though, what is interesting is the number of popular companies, that are staple anchors in the mall. The other thought though is while these companies have to know that their name is being sold via spam and splog, they do get blow back because there are some folks who will refuse to have anything to do with them. While it is also amusing that our 80 year old mom gets spam that wants to sell her penis enlarging pills, she has decided that she will boycott anyone who sends her spam. She does not care who they are, or where they are from, she just will not shop there anymore.
She no longer shops at JC Penny’s.
The idea of a boycott though is interesting, maybe it is what it will take for companies to take their image more seriously on the Internet.
