ISP Troubles by the dozen

As we are coming up off our ISP imposed “take down” because of a spammer, IP Democracy is pointing to a major outage with Navisite who has had a relocation go horrifically wrong. We know how you feel, at least it wasn’t a spammer, you have someone real to beat on.

At this point, Navisite’s poorly planned data center consolidation has slipped from mere incompetence to outrageous indifference to its customers needs and should be grounds for legal action, if not government sanctions of some kind. As I understand it, Navisite planned to “virtually” relocate servers from Baltimore to Andover, MA while an actual physical move of the servers was conducted via ground transportation. There seems to be a lot of troubles with ISP’s lately in what is turning into a downward spiral on the wire lately. If it is not knee jerk reactions to upstream providers for drive by spamming with a homicide, it is a co-location that has gone wrong, to amazingly enough, such poor security that the datacenter has been hit 4 times in 2 years.

While these are viable businesses, it gets all the more interesting when you start adding up the deterioration of an industry, and no one is really able to tell why these things are going on, let alone how to fix them. Many issues have been caused because of shoddy conditions in the data center, or not spending enough time to follow up with what is really happening.

The decline of an industry is sad to see, but the sad part is that no one should be really surprised by anything that a datacenter, ISP, hosting company, or others that provide some of the support that people need, has gone stunningly downhill in the longer run. If there is a reliable host out there, that won’t knee jerk react to what is happening, uses well thought out plans to move their facilities around, and know enough about running a data center so that they won’t get robbed, we would like to talk to you.

  1. As it becomes easier for people to do a thing (e.g., start a particular kind of business), the quality of that business often declines. Individuals jump into the pool who aren’t as well trained, don’t have the same level of background, are doing it for financial gain vs. because it’s their passion, etc…
