Earlier today we wrote about bittorrent trackers being taken off line, and with the rumors continuing to circulate about the Google Drive or GDrive, it might be time to talk about on line storage of major media files that you burn at home for your own use. The GDrive and other network cloud storage makes an interesting argument on keeping your favorite movies and media on line, safe from drive failures, and downloadable from anywhere in the world.
This has got to be an issue that the media companies might want to talk to Google about, as on line drive storage is something that people want, and something that people will use. Google can cash in on its good name to make this happen, in a safe friendly way. The question is going to be what kind of privacy users are going to have if they use the drive.
Google already offers hosted storage for a variety of its Web-based applications, but this service would act as a sort of umbrella storage for multiple Google applications, allowing people to do keyword searches on their files, according to the Journal. Source: Washington Post
Since we are already familiar with using Google Storage, there probably is not going to be many changes in the expectations that users have. Unless for some reason the TOS that Google has suddenly changes, it might be the best way to store off those backups made of web sites, movies, music, and other legal backups that people have. Then access them anywhere in the world when you need to for whatever reason.
The other curious part on this one is how will the media producers go after Google when they find that hundreds of thousands of movies, music, video, television, and other entertainment is stored in a Google data center somewhere. Media is not a friend of backups, even though they are legal to make. It will be interesting to see if media goes after the GDrive the same way that they have gone after YouTube. It will also be interesting to see if small communities of interest can be built around the shared drive space, and what implications that will have for file sharing.
