Really liking Mixx

Other bloggers have been talking about Mixx, a Digg competitor, so we went to check it out, and frankly, we are really beginning to like it a whole lot more than propeller, stumbleupon or Digg in terms of developing the community. While we post a couple of links a day, the things we are voting on are so much more interesting than the “make money quick” or stupid geek humor that we find on Digg.

From us, Dave it is a good idea, and you know where things are, you don’t have to wade through the top 100 funny cat pictures to get to anything relevant, and best of all, you and your gang can vote on things that are important to you. In general though, advertising will pay the bills at 100 visitors a day with about 800 page reads, and you can set this all up for about 100 dollars a year. The social software is free too, use Pligg, it is easy to customize and install. Find a good hosting provider, and watch out for people who will try to use the system for their own spammy needs. And in going through Mixx, we are just enjoying it, many of our articles have stopped being posted to Digg, we never really got into reddit, and stumbleupon keeps on showing us an annoying blank screen whenever we try to post anything (no matter which version we use, stumbleupon does not work for us).

Mixx is cleaner, nicer, and has a very good group of people; we are actually using it, using it a lot, and enjoying the experience. This is the interesting part, when we use Digg and others, we really are trying to generate buzz around an issue, when we use Mixx, we want to talk to the community. While we don’t know how long we will use Mixx, (We need a word press plug-in to make this work better for us) in the short term, it is providing a great community, that does not seem to proud of itself, and in general, makes for a nice social book marking system.
