The rumor that broke on techcrunch about Robert Scoble leaving Podtech quickly became the rumor of the day next to blognation calling it a day. Now that rumor is true, and that is that Robert Scoble is leaving podtech to go do other things. The rumor had him pegged to go to fast company, but according to Robert, the deal isn’t signed yet.
I told everyone that it was true that I had decided to leave PodTech, but that Fast Company hasn’t been signed yet and that I’m still considering two options, one of which is Fast Company. My last day there will be January 14th. I am working on a number of PodTech initiatives, including the CES BlogHaus as well as a Blogger Bus Tour to CES from San Francisco to Las Vegas which is sponsored by Microsoft (more on the bus, as well as how you can get a seat, next week when I get back into the office). In reading through the whole blog entry though, Robert touches on some interesting issues, ones that are faced by employees and employers alike, in that there is a tendency to use what you have until someone gets annoyed with the situation. The comment “I’m tired of getting used by companies who just use and use and use without giving anything in return” is enough of a wake up call that should make management stop and think for a moment.
There is a point in people’s lives where there is a large amount of just being tired, from an IT worker who finally fries out after years of 80 hour weeks on salary, to people who just get ground down by the continual management shuffle and reorganization system.
This is almost quintessential web 2.0, going back to the cottage industry, people take different jobs for different reasons. People have been known to quit just because they can, and being tired is one reason to quit.
We hope that we will still see the scoble show on occasion, but in the longer run, the influence that he has had at microsoft and at podtech are going to be hard to fill. You have to find the right people, we wish podtech well, but with the CEO bailing, and now the anchor for the company, it is going to be a long hard road for podtech to take. They may be making millions, they are not dead pool material yet, but it will be interesting to see who they bring in next to be their names anchor.
