How links on Techmeme pay off

While there is little actual traffic value to being linked on techmeme, there are some other very interesting things that have happened because of our six or seven links on techmeme.

This is based on our own experience with Techmeme, your mileage might vary.

The biggest benefit has been in Technorati authority, we have seen it go from our usual 70-75 to a final cross over of 100 this morning. Most of those cross-links can be attributed to techmeme rather than by some other status. While a Technorati authority of 100 sounds very low, for a blog that is less than a year old, no budget, no advertising to drum up interest, and just letting the chips fall, not a bad showing.

Others pay attention which is interesting in the longer run, the long-term pay off’s have been more reader interest and more reader interaction when talking about a bigger issue. Some of our best comments have come because of a techmeme link. It has helped us build out more of a community feel, which is very nice.

Techmeme helps the long tail, when a person uses the Techmeme River; we will see an increase in the long tail, meaning links, and readers to older articles.

Realistically, being on techmeme might not add to your traffic right off the bat like a good stumbleupon or a good Digg, but what it can and does do is pay off in a longer run for people researching articles, or just adding to your Technorati authority, which can be good.
