Microsoft bids 44 billion on Yahoo
Update 1 (4:51 AM 01 Feb 2008) - Press conference has been called for 5:30 AM Redmond/Seattle Time - The link is here, this might be interesting.
In an early morning Redmond time Microsoft announced that it had made an unsolicited bid on yahoo sending its share soaring in premarket moves. This unsolicited bid could be the one thing that saves both Yahoo and Microsoft a lot of work when it comes to competition with Google. The only thing that Yahoo has to do is say yes.
Given the premarket move though, it looks like traders are ready to cash in on what has been an under performing stock for the last few years.

This has set the techmeme board alight with the idea, with many bloggers jumping on the issue on both sides of the fence. Some think it is a good idea, others think it is a bad idea. The real issue is what can Yahoo and Microsoft do to catch up with Google who keeps on growing and dominates the market for a number of technologies from search to advertising.
This is well worth following the conversation on this one, and reading what Search Engine Land has to say as they update their file, and as more people get past the first cup of coffee.
