Why Obama should be our technology president

While I am generally one to stay as far away from politics as possible, and not prone to saying anything about any candidate, I am finding that Obama has a compelling message about technology that every other candidate does not have.

The consistent clear message on what he would do about the way that technology, law, people, and politics intersects is important to every startup in Seattle, Silicon Valley, Boston, Austin, and points in between. Not only does he have his message, his supporters are using the technology that we have built or contributed to as part of his “net roots” message.

Obama’s technology policy reads like a manifesto for the open network, protecting kids but also understanding that adults have different tastes and responsibilities. Universal service that can add some billions of dollars to the economy, and more of a liaise fair approach to letting the technology market do its thing. Nowhere in it does he say that he will put RIAA above people even if the court systems seem to want to go that way.

You can read his technology policy here, and it is well worth reading, if you are rooted in Web 2.0, if you know that government needs to change to meet the needs of where we are going in relationship to society and how technology intersects, enhances, and drives societal change. You could not ask for a better policy, something that the other candidates are missing.

“Yes we can” is a watch word in the entrepreneurial environment; we need that same entrepreneurial message from government. More than a catch phrase, more than a witty euphemism for “business as usual”, we have the ability to elect someone that will undo the damage done, and bring us back to a shiny happy place when everything was possible before the dot com bust. We can do it smarter this time, we can do it better this time, and positive leadership from the top down always makes this easier.
