World goes insane over flickr video

The official news is out, that flickr is now supporting video uploads and video sharing. I wonder if they knew that Smugmug has been doing this for months already. The other irony part is that they are allowing a new picture max upload per month of 20 Megabytes rather than the old standard of 10 Megabytes.

In all, this might be the best non-news of the day. If you look at their competition, sites like Zivity and Smugmug, Flickr is behind the times, a day late and a dollar short.

Hey group admins! The launch of video on Flickr brings additional moderation tools to your group. In addition to specifying what kind of content you’d like to see in your group (”photos”, “video”, or “photos + video”), you can also have a say in the safety level of what people can contribute to your group pool. There’s more info in this revised group FAQ. Bonus (for those who’ve read this far): We’re doubling the size of photos that can be uploaded — 20MB per photo for pro members and 10MB per photo for members with free accounts. Source: Flickr Blog

Flickr video

Not to beat on the folks at Flickr, they do good, they are popular, but they are really behind the times, if you load a regular high quality JPG on to flickr they usually come in somewhere around 2 megs each, so rather than 5 pictures a month, you get 10.

The storage allowance for video is paltry, 90 secondson a paid account, you can do 10 minutes on youtube for free, and you are unlimited on sites like Blip.tv and before they closed on Stage6. Even smugmug allows for unlimited sizes on your video, what is someone going to do with 90 seconds.

Really, what was the point here? Ok, it is news, and all the bloggers are going ga ga on this one, but taking a hard look at the numbers, unless you are loading crap ½ meg pictures, or you can say what you want to say in 90 seconds, the compelling reason to use this? Can’t find it, everyone else gives people so much more to work with that this is the best non-news of the day.
