Magnolia aims for Federated Identity
Magnolia spoke at Gnomedex yesterday about how they are working with implementing a federated identity for use across multiple services to make magnolia more interesting to users. Magnolia does not have the audience of say delicious, but even still, this is an ambitious project for any company to undertake, and it will not be easy.
We’re going to find out, with today’s announcement of Ma.gnolia 2, or M2 for short. M2 is a ground-up rewrite of Ma.gnolia, re-creating features we love today, taking a second run at what didn’t worked as well as planned, on a distributed, service-based architecture designed to handle the large volumes of data we’ve seen. What’s more, M2 will be an open source project that can be downloaded to remix and run as your own. Source: Magnolia Blog

Federated identity on the scale that Magnolia is thinking of is not an easy project, many federated identity projects have failed because of the level of complexity around programming, security, identity authentication, how to use the protocols, and still provide functionality so that the user has a seamless experience. Then there are the additional difficulties of making sure that the system works across the entire federated identity group.
In all this is a huge project, and it will be interesting to touch bases with them over the next year to see how well it will go.
