Huge Apple Day Apple wins the summer back to School Season ITunes Threats and Apple Drops the NDA
Image by tychay via FlickrHuge apple news today, apple takes a 20% market share in computer sales, apple threatens to shut down ITunes in England, and Apple dumps the Iphone developers NDA. All in one day.
Someone please note this, the numbers are in, and Apple has won the back the school season by taking a whopping 20% of market share or July and August 2008.
What is also notable that Notebook sales are down 1.5% in the same period. The fun part is that well, the first apple I ever bought was part of those numbers, and still cannot stop thinking about the overall loss that that my one macbook sale really ended up being. No Vista, no Word, no AV, no Anti-spyware, no Audio recording software, no movie making software, and moved away from IE, not that I have not done that much earlier in the year.
It also made a dent in the entire windows eco structure for software. There are lots of things that didn’t get bought. So the add on process pretty much so passed on this one buy. Now take that to the 20% market share of units, and that adds up to a pretty sizeable chunk of money.
Impressive as the 20 per cent marketshare statistic is - for a company that’s so often regarded as a doomed irrelevance - it’s not the best one. That figure covers Apple’s share of the market as measured by the number of boxes shifted. Look at the revenue garnered instead, and Apple’s market share jumps to 35 per cent. Source: Reghardware
While we talk about how apple is cleaning everyone’s clocks, there is a negative side to all of this concerning ITunes and the spat they are having right now with the royalties of music over in England right now. If they were to shut down ITunes in England well, that is going to hurt not just Apple, but the entire eco structure that apple is currently building around their systems. While it highly likely that ITunes in England will not be shut down, this might have a negative influence on the important holiday season that is coming up. No one is going to want to be locked into something that is going to be turned off.
Then apple decides that they are going to dump the NDA that has been making everyone crazy who is developing apple widgets for their gear. The apple app store is a great idea, and something that might help independent developers work on a business model that will be recession proof. Having the NDA in place was difficult to accept for many people. The old NDA is still in effect until the new one rolls out sometime next week. This will increase the apple developers group ability to innovate and keep their products on the map better than what was happening previously.
There were some good things happening today, and this was definitely Apple’s day.
