Google launches new blog search update might mean something
In what is surely going to set the blogosphere ablaze, Google actually does something pretty cool, much like their news search feature where you can follow the meme of what people are talking about, Google updates its blog search feature to do much the same thing. This will truly help meme of the day bloggers find things to write about that just about everyone else is writing about.
Matter of observation, this was so important an update that techmeme was nearly set on fire with the number of bloggers having their say about the whole new system.
In relationship to blogging though, this is going to be something that is very useful for bloggers in the longer run who work on “meme of the day” blogging as their standard. This goes into the “pretty cool” department, and at least over threw apple’s amazing day in terms of blogosphere coverage yesterday.
Today, we’re pleased to launch a new homepage for Google Blog Search so that you too can browse and discover the most interesting stories in the blogosphere. Adapting some of the technology pioneered by Google News, we’re now showing categories on the left side of the website and organizing the blog posts within those categories into clusters, which are groupings of posts about the same story or event. Grouping them in clusters lets you see the best posts on a story or get a variety of perspectives. When you look within a cluster, you’ll find a collection of the most interesting and recent posts on the topic, along with a timeline graph that shows you how the story is gaining momentum in the blogosphere. Reality wise, yes this is very neat to see, but have to wonder how long it will take folks to figure out how to game this system much as they try to figure out how to game other social systems, or other news systems like this. The first time I see an ad for some sort of drug poised as a blog entry, and then I will know that the system has been truly gamed. Or the minute I see someone who has simply blockquoted someone else’s blog show up as the number one article in the category.
I can see a legion of SEO folks trying to figure out how to be the pivot point in Google blog search now.
Yes this is really cool, and yes it will make finding the meme of the day much easier in the longer run using both Google blog search and techmeme or its companions on the internet for figuring out what is hot now.
