More University of Washington layoffs are coming as the state cuts back on its budget, this time it is looking like mostly administration and teaching jobs that will be impacted by this one.
In an interview, Emmert said that under the first scenario, about 400 administrative and 200 teaching jobs would be cut. Beyond that, he said, most additional cuts would come from the ranks of instructional staff because the administration would be so thin. The smaller cut would result in several hundred fewer students being admitted to the UW annually, Emmert said. The larger cut would require a phased-in 15 percent reduction in undergraduates. This is also being reported by the Puget Sound Business Journal.
While it might look small in numbers, a cut back in student enrollment will put pressure on other colleges to step up the pace of enrollments. Emmert also says that they are not going to wait for the budget cuts to kick in; they are going to go ahead and release fifty people in the next couple of months. In all this is not all that great for the University of Washington. Few colleges in the region carry the same prestige as the UofW, and students will be hard pressed to find something in downtown Seattle outside of Seattle Pacific.
This might boost enrollments at the Bothell and Tacoma campuses, it might not if the cuts are across the system rather than isolated to the downtown Seattle campus. All of our support goes out to the friends and families impacted by this draw down. With the proposed UofW budget from the state being cut by 116 million dollars, this will be tough to overcome. While the economy will at some point recover, and we will go back to business as usual in terms of people working, right now, this is not a good thing for students or staff. And we wish everyone the best.
