Eight reasons I love FriendFeed

Many people have heard about FriendFeed as the latest hottest place to hang out online, but there are some very real reasons to <3 FriendFeed. From the conversations, to the users, to the meme’s of the day, FriendFeed is a great place to find conversation, people, and new stuff. But here is the list.

1. The conversations – if you look at twitter, facebook, or even your very own blog it is nearly impossible to have a decent threaded conversation with multiple people. Many do not leave responses on blogs (take a look at this blog and you will see what I mean), whereas with FriendFeed the conversations and likes happen, often taking on very interesting lives of their own that the original poster did not think would happen.

2. Not just the cool kids A listers hang out there, I have found more interesting people with some of the most diverse opinions in just one location, and that is FriendFeed. That is the cool part about it, you get a very real diversity of opinion, and if someone gets too trollish or abusive, hey, hide them, block them, move along now nothing to see here.

3. The owners of FriendFeed care, for the most part they are engaged with their own community. There is none of the absent management that has plauged MySpace, Facebook and Twitter. FriendFeed owners and developers really do care about their site, they use it, and they are there every day. Submit something to the FriendFeed Feedback room, and you will get a conversation going that includes the actual operators and developers of FriendFeed.

4. The major companies are there, want to talk to Fantagraphics? Want to debate a Washington Post article, you can. The companies you care about are there, and if they are not already, squat on their user account. While you will loose it later on, if you find that Mazda does not have an account, nothing says you can not make a shrine to Mazda on FriendFeed.

5. For the most part this is the most polite social network on the planet with well developed and enforced norms for behavior. If you suddenly get a lot of unsubscribes and blocks, well you crossed the line.

6. The most popular stuff (ffholic) is all the cat funny pictures, people funny pictures, and other things that appeal to a broad audience. It is easy to get something cool on the site, and let the community vote/comment on the item. The most recognizable names on FriendFeed are not the most prolific bloggers in the world, but honest sharing people who will show their their “awwwww” baby pictures.

7. Of all the social networking sites out there, this is for everyone, no rampant sexually suggestive ads (MySpace), no rampantly stupid ads (Facebook), no odd ball off the wall weirdness or drives to have a million followers that you will never follow back (Twitter). This is the pre celebrity place to share cool stuff with amazing people.

8. Once of the more interesting things is that if you have a friend announce your new account on FriendFeed, you will get many welcome messages from the community. You will not find that on any other social website. How many times have you been made welcome glad you are here on a social networking website?

Those are my top eight reasons for loving and <3 (hearting) FriendFeed, while I am not an addict yet, FriendFeed is one of the most interesting places to hang out. Even though “real time” might throw you for a loop the first time you see it, always remember the pause button in the upper right hand corner in the blue bar right above the text bar. It will make your experience with FriendFeed that much more manageable.

Also don’t forget to make lists and put your new FriendFeed friends in them to help you manage the conversations that you will take part in. If you want, you can follow me on FriendFeed right here, in the longer run, you will be glad you joined in the conversation.

A bunch of those reasons you listed… like shouting out a new account, no porn & polite… is like the old days of twitter. As long as it’s a small community it’ll stay that way. Just don’t let Oprah, Obama or CNN find out the secret!

I especially like that , if I have a question all I have to do is post it here and a pro will answer (usually more than one and usually arguing about the answer). Also, being able to converse with people who I’m following their blogs for online education. Made some great friends, learned massive amounts of information.

@molly – should we just ban aplusk right now and get it over with, or just squat on the account? :-)

Great post on FriendFeed, I’m falling in love with the site and letting others know about it too. It’s a great listening tool and great for participating in conversations like you said. The pause button is key, especially for new users who don’t understand or get “real-time’ at first.

Oh yeah, I’m hitting the follow button.
